Breast Screening

The aim of breast screening is to detect breast cancer as early as possible in order to reduce the mortality rate. The breast screening unit operates a three yearly call/recall system for Liverpool, Southport/Formby, Sefton and Knowsley. The programme invites all women aged 50 to 64 years for breast screening by mammography. Any woman 65 years or over can request screening by ringing the unit on 0151 708 8157. They do not need a GP referral letter.

The programme is for women without symptoms. Anyone with breast symptoms should consult their GP who will, if necessary refer them to an appropriate consultant/clinic. To ensure they receive their invitations, women must check that their GP has their correct address and date of birth.
