Breast Cancer Surgery |
Specialist breast surgery is performed by the Breast Team of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital’s Breast Unit. The Unit sees over 300 new cancer patients s each year treated by the full range of available treatment procedures. We work closely with the oncologists to provide the best treatment for each patient. Approximately half of patients with breast cancer are treated by mastectomy and the rest by breast conserving wide local excision. |
Breast Reconstruction |
Those patients requiring mastectomy are offered breast reconstruction. A variety of different techniques are used. Two stage expander and implant reconstruction is most common, followed by the transverse rectus abdominus myocutaneous (TRAM) flap and latissimus doris flap. |
New Techniques |
The Mini-latissimus dorsi Flap |
The mini-latissimus dorsi flap. A recently described technique allowing a larger number of patients to be treated without mastectomy. This technique allows a wide excision of the tumour, and fills the resultant defect with muscle from the back. Breast Onco-plastic Surgery Our surgeons are trained in both oncological (cancer) and breast reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. This combines the best of both disciplines to give good quality cancer surgery but with the smallest possible cosmetic defect. Sentinel Node Biopsy A new technique to reduce the surgery required to the axilla by removing (in the majority) only one gland instead of all the glands in the axilla. Presently this technique is carried out as part of a study, but will hopefully be adapted in routine practise at the end of this study. |
Breast Plastic Surgery |
A number of other serious breast problems are treated. The commonest of these is breast reduction. Patients with very marked size difference between the breasts are also commonly treated. One of the keys to good breast reconstruction is assessment of the whole patient and very often surgery to the normal breast will be considered after breast reconstruction to get a good match both in and out of clothes. |
