Physiotherapy Services

The physiotherapy staff, provide treatments, advice and education to clients and staff attending or working in the hospital. In the field of paediatrics we initiate the treatment of talipes and brachial plexus palsy, referring on to our physiotherapy colleagues at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for outpatient treatments as required.

In the field of obstetrics we provide consultative outpatient appointments for ante natal women with back and pelvic pain; teaching self help techniques, posture/ back care advice and the fitting of pregnancy supports as appropriate. Working closely with the parentcraft midwife, physiotherapy classes for labour, teaching, exercise, relaxation, breathing techniques, posture, movement and massage are held.

The obstetric wards are visited daily on weekdays by a physiotherapist. All women who have undergone a caesarean section are seen routinely, to ensure chest clearance, gradual mobility and to be provided with post natal advice. Soft tissue treatment for the perineum with either pulsed short-wave diathermy or ultrasound is given on referral of a client by the midwife. As required, specific treatments for related problems i.e. stress incontinence, back/pelvic pain, are available on referral.

In the field of gynaecology we provide surgical inpatient treatments aiming to prevent and treat post-operative problems especially with the chest and circulation. We encourage and assist with mobility, provide support and help with post-operative exercises and provide specialised treatments for specific problems as required.

The department provides gynaecology outpatient treatments. Referrals are received from our own clinics no GP open access is available. Our main area of outpatient workis in the treatment of incontinence and we work closely with our colleagues in the urodynamics department. We provide a range of treatments - pelvic floor exercises, vaginal cones, biofeedback and electrical stimulation, and have the most upto date equipment for this. We strive to keep abreast of all new developments to ensure the most upto date treatments are available.

To provide maximum cover we have an out of hours emergency on-call service, provided by our physiotherapy colleagues at the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen Hospital Trust.

Physiotherapy students attend the unit on three week placement, they observe and carry out supervised treatments as part of their training.
